You didn’t mention all the politicians, mostly republicans in the House, who are scared of committing political suicide if they vote against the wishes of the NRA; they will get a naughty rating and cause lots of money to be directed toward their opponent in the next election. As Obama pointed out, it would be appropriate if they would listen to the people and not to the money bag lobbyists.

What futility there is in petitioning a government with the expectation that the well being of the common man is of any priority to it, one that issues a presidential directive for a nuclear first strike doctrine—even in its lesser-of-two-evils configuration, from Jimmy Carter, humanitarian of repute, no less.

    Only the State—suicidal in itself with its policy of mutually assured destruction, still in effect, contrary to popular misunderstanding, still MAD—and individuals who are intent on suicide are capable of acting above, outside of, and with indifference to law.
