  3. There is nothing new under the sun.

    The prosecution of war remains the destruction of the body’s integrity, whether by stone, by arrow, by nuclear weapon, or by whatever technological ingenuity is to be next contrived.

    We never start again from nothing but from the scratch, and its scar, that reveals anew the trace of injuries past.

    The Bill of Rights, for example, reveals the invasions of tyrannies past, just as the footprint in mud reveals the past presence of the foot that made it.

    The Bill of Rights, as are so many other documents, is the scar left from past transgressions and a warning against newly contrived means of repeating anew the same old injury.
